" I and my associates are orthopedic surgeons in private practice. Dr. Seidelmann has been interpreting our MRI’s for a number of years. He has been extremely valuable in helping us set up our MRI program, both in the selection of the equipment as well as in helping us maintain it and determining which sequences will give us the best possible images. In addition, he and our group have worked together in setting up seminars to review interesting cases, which, of course, has been extremely helpful from an educational standpoint. I do a fair amount of arthroscopic surgeries and this allows us to compare arthroscopic findings with the MRI interpretations. I use to obtain arthorgrams on shoulders when the MRI came back with a rotator cuff tear and found in many cases that the MRI’s were inaccurate. Since Dr. Seidelmann has been reading our films I have yet to find one that he has read in error. His knowledge of MRI from a technical point of view as well as his knowledge of MRI anatomy is impressive. " My pursuit of subspecialty teleradiology, particularly with Franklin & Seidelmann, was really driven by my referring physician base and their requirements for CAQ’d neuroradiologists and fellow-ship trained musculoskeletal radiologists. It was important to me that they be based in the U.S. and provide real-time consultations.
In order to offset losses from DRA cuts in reimbursements and to increase our referrals and market share it made sense to utilize a subspecialty teleradiology model which is more cost-effective than hiring full-time multi subspecialist positions who would probably be underutilized at times. We have seen an increase in referrals for neuro and spine imaging, as well as an increase from orthopedic surgeons in our community. We have been able to offer a higher level of quality and detail in neuroradiology and musculoskeletal reports.
We are now more competitive against the 50 to 60 man radiology groups. One example comes to mind with a challenging neuroradiology MRI case. I had received a report as a second opinion case in which a young patient had two lesions within the left cerebral hemisphere. The appearance with enhancements raised the possibility of benign and malignant primary glial tumors. There were several Franklin & Seidelmann radiologists who collaborated with me and the neurosurgeon on this case to lead him in the direction of performing surgery in a very timely fashion.
The other big advantage I also want to point out that I am not just a single radiologist anymore, now I have an army of 100 subspecialty radiologists behind me. Franklin & Seidelmann has offered me the ability to compete as a multi specialty practice. By offsetting the cases that typically take longer to Franklin & Seidelmann, it has allowed me to provide improved services and faster report turnaround for the cases that a single, general radiologist would provide such as ultrasound, X-Ray, mammography, and CT cases. This has led to an increase in satisfaction levels from my referring physicians for the general radiology cases I provide as well. "
